R&D Claim Signal Check
Enter a UK company number or name for an instant, evidence-based check of R&D tax credit claim signals. We combine live Companies House data with signals from our internal screening database (filed accounts and public grant-funding records) to show what is publicly known about a company's R&D activity. This is a free automated indicator, not tax advice.
Quick answer: This free tool checks a UK company number against live Companies House filings and Uplift Tax's own screening database, then reports whether R&D-related intangible assets or public grant-funding signals are present. Each result is marked yes, no, or unknown, sourced to a specific filing or record and never guessed. It is not a claim value or tax advice.
Important
This tool indicates signals, not legal or tax advice
Uplift Tax is an introducer service. We are not a tax adviser, accountant or legal firm. The result shown here is an automated indicator built from public Companies House data and our internal screening database. It is not a guarantee that your company qualifies for R&D tax relief, and it does not calculate a claim value.
Where we hold no data on a company, the result says unknown rather than guessing. Whether your company qualifies for relief, and the value of any claim, must be confirmed by an HMRC-registered specialist on the basis of a full review.
What counts as an R&D asset marker?
An R&D asset marker reads "yes" when a company's filed accounts show R&D-related intangible assets, either from our internal screening database (companies whose accounts we have already reviewed) or from a live Companies House scan run at the moment you search. It reads "no" when the accounts have been reviewed and no R&D-related intangibles were found, or when the accounts show the company is already claiming R&D tax relief through RDEC. This check is separate from the grant-funding signal, which looks for an Innovate UK or other public grant-tracking record rather than accounts data. A company can show a positive signal on one, both, or neither.
Why does my company show "unknown"?
"Unknown" is not a negative result. It means we have no public evidence either way, and the tool is built to say so rather than guess. This happens when a company has not yet been through our screening and a live scan could not complete in time, when it files micro-entity accounts that do not disclose enough detail to assess R&D signals, when Companies House records show it as dormant, dissolved, or inactive, or when no accounts have been filed yet. None of these outcomes says anything about whether the company could make a genuine R&D claim, they only say the public record does not give us enough to judge.
Common questions
No. This tool gives an automated indicator based on public Companies House data and our internal screening database. It is not tax advice and not a guarantee of eligibility or claim value. Whether your company qualifies, and the value of any claim, must be confirmed by an HMRC-registered specialist.

It means at least one of the two signals, R&D asset markers or grant-funding, came back yes. It does not confirm eligibility. It means public records show at least one positive R&D-related signal that is worth exploring further with a specialist.
It means both signals came back no: no R&D-related intangible assets in filed accounts and no public grant-funding record found. This is not conclusive. Many genuine R&D claims do not show up as balance-sheet intangibles or grant records, so this result is a prompt to look further, not a rejection.
You can check any UK-registered company by its Companies House number, or search by name. If a company has not yet been through our internal screening, we run a live Companies House check where possible. If that is not possible in the time available, the result shows unknown for that signal rather than a guess.
Yes. We log each lookup, including the company searched and standard technical details such as your IP address, to prevent abuse and monitor the tool's accuracy. See our privacy policy for how we handle this data.
